Like many stitchers, I really enjoy browsing through embroidery books and magazines.

I am a regulary subscriber to The Gift of Stitching on-line magazine

The Gift of Stitching MagazineI enjoy the good mix of embroidery styles, patterns and articles.

The issue this month has the start of a very tempting and beautiful blackwork sampler worked in coloured threads.

I enjoyed Bargello by Brenda Day with it's Wonderful ideas for florentine/bargello stitching. This book was delightful to read, and presented lots of ideas for modern patterns using florentine (bargello) stitch.

I especially liked the storyboards showing how the author came to design each project. The links from historical examples are fascinating.

Experienced stitchers will enjoy this book and find lots to inspire them, but the descriptions and instructions are so clear that beginner stitchers will be able to produce beautiful work

The Beginner's Guide to Blackwork by Lesley Wilkins is an excellent on-going reference

The clear instructions and stitch pictures are great for those who are beginning blackwork, but this book is an excellent reference for keeping. It will take a lot of stitching to grow out of all the fillings, borders and motifs included.

My one small complaint is that I didn't really like the worked samples presented. I would have like some more that had a modern feel.

All in all a book well worth having on your bookshelf.

A "fun" site...

All Harry Potter fans should visit the sorting hat site, expecially if you have ever wondered where the sorting hat would put you.
